easy peasy

I realize not everyone has access to a car in Boston, at least not often enough to go on a bunch of hikes and excursions around New England. But everyone can use a little time "out of the city" every once in a while. So these are my favorite places in Boston to get the feel of being away from the city, even just for a bit.

Hall's Pond Sanctuary

Hall's Pond Sanctuary is nestled right between Brookline and Boston between the B and C lines. There is a pretty boardwalk through a thickly wooded area next to the open field at Amory Park. There's a spot to play with your dog or throw a football around, and there's a spot to escape a bit more. I've seen turkeys, ducks and turtles, as well as a variety of other smaller birds and wildlife. Its a mini-oasis in the middle of the city - perfect to walk through on a shortcut or spend a few minutes strolling by the pond.

Chestnut Hill Reservoir

I've posted about Chestnut Hill Reservoir before, but its really such a nice place to walk to if you aren't too far.  Its right at the end of the C and D line, only about a five minute walk, and obviously the sunsets are spectacular. There's also a path to walk (or run, if you're feeling ambitious), and on sunny days its a great place to go with friends and spend a little time outdoors.

Castle Island

Castle Island is a bit harder to get to, but if you take the 9 bus to Farragut St you wont be far. In south Boston, it is home to Fort Independence, which has been standing since the 1600's. (So for history buffs, its a win/win!) Its a beautiful view, there's a little restaurant (we didn't eat there, but it's probably good!), and its just a nice place to go to take a breath. Theres a lot of planes flying overhead, which takes a little away from the illusion, but its such a pretty place. FYI, its not an island anymore..in case that's what you were expecting.

The Emerald Necklace

Last, but certainly not least, is the Emerald Necklace. This string of parks is pretty much all over Boston, but this is one of my favorite spots. It's right off the C line at Saint Mary's St, down Park Ave a ways. Its quiet, calm, and there's benches along the path to stop and take it all in. A great way to pass an afternoon would be to walk the paths through the parks and the gardens, then grab some food around Newbury area! Not a bad day, huh?
